In three short years, Detroit-based singer SEMAJE has defined his voice and style in the ever-changing gospel music field. With his smooth, lilting tenor, he has branded himself as an urban inspirational groove master, and a crooner of ballads such as “I Rely.” After much music industry buzz and excitement over his arrival, he’s finally releasing his debut album, `92 – the year of his birth and a subtle celebration of that period. The new set sparkles with retro 90s flavors of Dangerous era Michael Jackson and early Boyz II Men. The menu features urban bops such as the Afrobeat flavored “A OK,” the dancer “Fine,” the DMV Go-go bounce of “You (Live)” and a festive remake of Donald Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers’ classic 2002 jam, “The Best Is Yet to Come (feat. Anesha Birchett).” Those are balanced with the aforementioned “I Rely,” the tenderly introspective tune “Change” and “First Love” which recalls the vocoder technology that was popularized by the late Roger Troutman (“I Heard It through the Grapevine”) back in the 1980s. ’92 is a stunning set of inspired songs by a young man with a nostalgic toe in the past, while he plants a full foot into a bright and percussive future!
